What do we do with conquering narratives of the Bible? A Potentially Dangerous Questions Circle (all day & in-person)

In a potentially dangerous questions circle,

we do not expect or look for all of us to land in the same place or believe the same thing at the end of the day. We are not looking for answers, we are sitting with the questions, and creating space for the wrestling, wonder, uncertainty, and growth held within them.

We use midrash to explore the language, history, and hints within Scripture passages, while bringing our actual lived experiences into the gathered circle. We encourage questions that kick at the tires of heresy, and find hope in the gathered wisdom of community. Together, we expand each other’s experience of what is sacred, whole, and good.

In this circle, we will look at passages in the book of Joshua, wrestling with questions like,

  • What do we do with the conquering narratives of the Bible?

  • Does God ever command war and colonialism?

  • In times of war and oppression in the modern world, do we just need to pretend the book of Joshua doesn’t exist?

  • How does the view of a “violent Old Testament God” affect how we see God and the Bible?

This circle will be in Richfield and co-led by Stephanie Spencer and Lisa Adams.

This all day study will give us time to dive into deeper questions and explore more— together. Don’t worry, we will take breaks- in the morning and the afternoon, and for lunch. There will be study but also space, conversation, and community.
